Termite Alate Flight
Have you heard that termites can nest in trees?
They certainly can.
And here is an example in that large tree, if you look
where the arrow is, you will see a winged termite, termite
alates about to take flight, often on a very
humid afternoon, quite often
following a storm.
You find that thousands
and hundreds of thousands of termites will fly out
of a nest like the one that you saw.
And this is what we tend to see.
They will be attracted to light. But what’s going to happen?
These hundreds of thousands of termites, many of them will be picked off by predators, birds, ants, other things.
or get caught in, in spiderwebs and that sort of caper.
But what they’re going to do is,eventually they’ll drop their wings, they’ll crawl around,
find a mate, and all they need to do is to be able to find a little bit of timber and some moisture and they can start building a nest.
Five to seven years later, we’ve got a full-blown nest that can potentially let another half a million termites emerge.
What you might see around your place could just be some wings like this in a cobweb, or you might find some strange little creatures around the place. This is on someone’s hand. You need to be aware that this is going on.
Those ants, they’re doing you a favour. If you see this where they’ve collected termites,
you wanna make sure termites do not set up nest at your home.
Termites nesting in a tree
I am often asked if termites nest in trees? yes they do. This footage shows one of those trees and some of the termites that are infesting the inside of it.
Termites only consume dead timber so that leaves the heartwood of trees susceptible to them as it is dead. If termites enter a tree they will consume all of the heartwood that they can which often leaves a cavity in the tree that is then able to be occupied as a nest.
Nests created in these cavities are often very safe places and the colonies can grow in size to be enormous. Termites can have a range of 100 metres and occasionally more so if you have a tree you suspect of containg a termite nest please have a professional come and look at it.
Treatment is often simple and it does not include taking the tree down.

Termites can get in to your house through the weep holes
Termites are just like the rest of us, they take the easiest way they can find. To enter a house the easiest way may well be through a weep hole, one of those gaps created around the perimeter of a house to ensure air flow and allow any storm water that may have entered the house to exit.
if a termite is able to find one of these entry points then access to your home is granted.
This particular home had a large flower pot sitting in front of the weep hole blocking it from view, because the pot was being watered well a plentiful amount of moisture was also available to the termites right at the spot they were entering the house.
The best thing to do is ensure you have a thorough termite inspection at least every 12 months.

Cockroaches Infesting a house in Picton
When cockroaches are left untreated over a long period of time they can build up to very large numbers. This house in Picton near Tahmoor was a rental property which the tenants had not looked after very well at all.
Once they moved out the Landlord was able to call us in and we eliminated the cockroaches. The infestation was so large that we recommended a return visit to ensure that any cockroaches hatching out of eggs over the next 6-8 weeks were eliminated as well.
Termites nesting in a tree near Picton
This footage shows us finding signs of termites on a large tree, then we drilled a hole in that tree which revealed termites inside and a suspected nest.
We set up a baiting station on the tree and then returned after 4 weeks to see that bait had been consumed, we then returned four weeks later again and no termites were present.
Colony elimination has been achieved!

Cockroaches Infesting a house in Picton
The damage that was occasioned to this car by Rats may well be the highest documented cost for repairs in a car. The Engine and drive train will be taken out of the car so that all of the necessary repairs can be undertaken. Much of this damage has happened to plastic components under the bonnet and around the firewall necessitating replacement of the firewall insulation that has been ruined as well as many wiring harnesses and the wiring itself.
The damage was found when the owner of the car tried to start it and could not.
Rodents need to wear their teeth down to sharpen them as they grow at a rapid rate and the ideal density of an item is often plastics of various thickness. The rats had a field day here before being discovered.
This car was parked for eight days in Tahmoor before anything was noticed. Don’t chance it, preventative pest control is a necessity not a luxury.

These are the markings made when a rat has been using the same pathway for for a long time
Rats have an oil on their hair similar to humans, when they take the same pathway regularly their habit of leaning on surfaces means that the oils are deposited on surfaces as they move. The more a “runway” is used the darker the deposit is.
The home in this video had not been lived in for several years and their had been a family of Rats having the time of their lives.
