frequently asked questions
What would you like to know?
Are your treatments safe?
Yes, all pesticides used at Pestgo are extremely low toxic and safe for people and your four-legged furry friends. If sensitive pets with fins, feathers or scales are present, extra precautionary measures are taken to ensure their absolute protection.
Before any treatment is carried out, we will undertake a Health Risk Assessment to ascertain the presence of any possible health risks so these can be factored into the treatment plan.
What happens if it’s raining?
Rain will only affect the outcome of a treatment if it’s actually raining when we’re applying pesticide. If it’s raining too heavily, we won’t carry out that part of the treatment. We can however still treat in the roof void and under the house but may need to reschedule a time to finish off the exterior of the property.
Why don’t you spray inside?
We know that most people would prefer not to have unnecessary chemical residue lying around, particularly inside the home. We have found that through the strategic treatment of the roof void, the sub floor area, the exterior of the home and the yard, we can gain full control of most pests. There are occasions when it is necessary to treat inside, for example for German cockroaches, and this is carried out using specifically targeted, low-toxic products.
Why do you treat the roof void?
The roof void provides shelter and warmth. It can also provide a food source for some pests. Downlights for example will emit light upwards into the roof void and attract flying insects (spider food). Stored goods and electrical cables provide ideal nesting and gnawing materials for rodents. Cockroaches are nocturnal feeders and will find dark warm secure places like wall cavities and roof voids to rest during the day.
How do you treat the roof void?
An insecticidal powder is used in the roof void, where necessary. Liquids are too dangerous to use around the electrical circuits that are in roof voids. The insecticidal powder is delivered as a fine dust throughout the roof void with an electric blower which helps distribute the product to very hard to access areas.
Will rats and mice die in the roof?
Sometimes, but this is very rare. The bait does not kill instantly so the animal will still be able to go in search of food and water and is more likely to find a sheltered place outside the home to die.
Will you come back to remove dead rats and mice?
It’s not a standard part of our service to remove dead rats or mice however if you have difficulty in arranging to have a body removed, we carry this out for a fee. We can also supply you with a product specifically designed to effectively mask the smell of a rotting corpse.
Do I need to empty the cupboards?
Generally no. The gel bait used to treat inside cupboards for German cockroaches can be applied without having to empty the cupboards. Emptying of a cupboard would only be required before treatment of a specific pest infestation inside the cupboard.
Does someone need to be home?
In most cases, yes, as most services require access to the roof void. In the case of a termite inspection, we need to access all rooms inside the home.
Do we need to leave the house?
Generally no. As most treatments are targeted to areas where pests harbour, there is no need to leave the house. The exception is a flea treatment because all floor and/or lawn areas are treated and the product can take a few hours to dry. Once dry, it is safe to re-enter the home or yard.
How long do we have to be out of the house?
If you have a treatment carried out that requires you to leave the home, we will advise you when it is safe to re-enter, usually no more than 4 hours.
How long does it take?
The amount of time depends on the service to be carried out and the size of the home. As a guide, a termite inspection or a multi-pest treatment will usually take between 1.5 and 2 hours.
Will the pest spray get rid of rats and mice?
No. Rodents (rats and mice) are not treated with the same liquid pesticide used for other pests like cockroaches, ants and spiders. Baits are used to control rodents and must be strategically placed to ensure uptake.
Will the pest spray get rid of termites?
No. Unlike crawling insects, termites are subterranean, that is they live and work under the ground, not above it. Therefore, any surface treatment will not affect a termite’s ability to enter the home. And whilst spraying any termites you happen to see will kill them, it will not in any way affect the nest.
How do I know if it’s a possum or a rat?
The sound that a rat makes compared to the sound that a possum makes is starkly different. Usually you will only hear a possum just after dusk as it leaves for the night, and just before dawn as it returns in the morning. A possum will generally follow the same path from where it has been sleeping to the hole where it exits. The steps of a possum are heavy, regular steps. A rat on the other hand will move around quite quickly. Often there will be sustained gnawing sounds and the noises will vary from soft scurrying to sharp loud bangs.
How do you get rid of birds?
The most effective way to deal with pest birds is to permanently seal the access points that they are using to enter the structure. With small birds such as sparrows this is not always possible. If birds are nesting inside the roof void, we can remove the nest if it is accessible. The sizes of nests can vary from a small handful of nesting material up to 5 or 6 large garbage bags full. Once the nest is removed, we will treat the roof void with an insecticidal dust to kill the bird lice.
